Firefighters in Freezing Conditions in Chicago
I know this is old news, but the pictures are so stunning. The temperatures in Chicago reached around -45°C, with the wind chill factor. I'm not one for calling people heroes for doing their job, but there's definitely something about scenes like these. Here's a better written piece in the Telegraph:

Shintaro Ohata おはた しんたろ Sculptural Paintings
I came across this artist's great work on the internet. It has a feeling about it of the more romantic side of Japanese anime. It's such a simple idea of combining sculpture and painting, which I think he's carried off so well. The style of sculpture gives it an impression of... erm... impressionism of the Van Gogh variety, filtered through pop art (or something like that). Here's a link to a better written article.
